Chapter 13 - Hunter

When Hunter finally managed to fall asleep that night it wasn’t for long. Every time he closed his eyes, the fear of dreams kept him awake. Finally pure fatigue allowed him fall asleep. Hunter found himself in the woods near Camp Half-Blood. He knew exactly where he was in the woods, but it was much darker than he had seen it before. The sun was just starting to rise and he seemed to be sitting in a tree looking down to the ground. He seemed to be there for hours. The sun was just reaching over the line of trees when finally he heard a crack. He looked behind him and saw a woman. She had long blonde hair and was very thin, but had an attractiveness to her. Like she was commanding Hunter’s perspective. She was naked and Hunter went to shield his eyes, but found himself unable considering his lack of physical form. She stretched a little and shook her limbs as if waking up. The woman turned and he got a look of her face. She had black eyes and a slender face. It was very familiar in a way, but unfamiliar at the same time. She ran her fingers through her hair and Hunter saw something fall out of her hair. She sighed and did it again. On closer inspection, he saw that they were spiders.
“Come on. Mama needs some clothes.” She said with a giggle, her voice quiet, but clear. More spiders crawled from her hair and started circling her body. “Something fashionable, huh?” Hunter watched as hundreds of spiders circled her and slowly spun a dress patterned as snakeskin. Once they were finished, the spiders crawled back into her hair. She smoothed out her dress and let out a moan of liking. “Well done.” She said with a grin. She looked around finally and sighed. The woman crossed her arms and tapped her chin pensively. “What shall I do?” She said, narrowing her eyes. She snapped her fingers and her form seemed to flash for a second before clearing again. Instead of a woman, there was a familiar figure. A centaur. He had a bow slung over his shoulder and her turned.
Chiron. Hunter thought to himself. Chiron looked down at himself and then shook his head.
“No. Not this.” Chiron said. He said, snapping his fingers. The image flashed and appeared again, taking the form of Dana.
She must be a god, but…Which one? Hunter thought to himself as he watched The woman, now in the form of Dana, walk around a bit, seemingly getting used to a new body. She sighed and grumbled something before leaning against a tree and fidgeting with the t-shirt and the typical yellow jeans of Dana. She sighed and snapped her fingers again. Another flash and Hunter saw as a satyr stood in her place, leaning on the tree. She looked at her new form and sighed.
“This is nice, I suppose.” The satyr cooed, running his hands down the fur on his legs. “This might have to do.” There was a faint noise and Hunter listened carefully. It became louder and louder until Hunter woke up.
“Hunter! Wake up!” Will’s voice sounded from the other side of the door. “Chiron needs to talk to us.”  He pounded on the door again and Hunter groaned, rolling onto his stomach and putting his head over his pillow. There was a silence and Hunter looked up at the door, a little surprised. There was a quiet rustling and then the door swung open. Will walked in, spinning water around his fingers.
“Since when can you pick locks?” Hunter asked, his voice muffled by his pillow. Will scoffed and snatched Hunter’s pillow and tossed it across the room.
“Ever since I was in Hermes for 5 years and found out that I had unlimited control of water. Now get up.” Will said, jabbing Hunter in the side with his foot. Hunter sighed and sat up in bed. Will walked back over to the door and leaned against the threshold. Hunter rolled out of bed and grabbed some clothes, slipping on a shirt.
“How’s Penny?” Hunter asked grabbing his jeans. “Turn around.” Will nodded and turned around with a sigh.
“She’s awake.” Will said with a nod. Hunter slipped off his pajama pants and pulled on some jeans. He looked over at Will and finally noticed how his shoulder slumped slightly.
“Did you sleep by her bed?” Hunter asked packing up a backpack with his typical quest kit. Will nodded. “You can turn around now.”
“She has a broken leg and a couple of broken ribs.” Will said, turning around again. “Not to mention all the scratches and bruises.” Hunter nodded. Hunter zipped his backpack and left it on his bed before looking up at Will. He looked so tired. Hunter walked over to him and patted him on the back.
“She should feel lucky that she had you to take her back to camp.” Hunter said with a comforting smile. Will sighed.
“Come on. Let’s go talk to Chiron.” They walked out of the cabin and Hunter closed the door   behind them. They walked to the Big house and stepped inside.
“Hey, Hunter.” Penny said with a wave. He noticed the cast on her leg and cut along her arm. She had a cut lip and bruises along her arms and legs. Will moved quickly across the room to her and put an arm around her.
“Hey, Penny. Looking good.” He said with a soft smile. Penny giggled a little, holding her ribs. “Sorry.” He said, feeling a little bad for making her laugh.
“Ah. Hunter. Good…Morning.” Chiron said, checking his watch. “How’d you sleep?” Hunter scoffed a little.
“Actively.” Hunter said with a nod and a tired chuckle. His dream flashed into his mind. The woman. The spiders. The satyr. He took a deep breath and looked at Chiron, pushing his dream to the back of his mind. “Very actively.” He said under his breath.
“Something wrong?” Chiron asked, looking at Hunter oddly. Hunter waved it off.
“No.” He said quickly. “Umm…No. I’m—I’m okay.” He said with a nod. “So what is it? What’s going on?” He asked, trying to change the subject off of him. Chiron’s face turned grim and he looked at Dionysus’ chair. “Chiron, where is Mr. D?” He asked, tilting his head a little. Chiron nodded solemnly.
“It seems that we have a prophecy coming.” Chiron said with a sigh. “This is no small matter, either.” He wheeled to the table. He opened the book of monsters and opened to the back page. There was a huge heading on the page that read ‘biggest threats’. He slid the book over to Hunter. A large picture of Typhon loomed over the page. “He was called away by the gods.”
“To Olympus?” Will asked, taking a step forward his arm firmly around Penny. “That’s not odd.”
“No. To the underworld.” Chiron said with a nod. “There seems to be a problem with Tartarus. Somehow—“ Chiron was interrupted by the Big house door opening. Hunter turned around to see a girl with ratty jeans and bright red hair. “Ah..Ms. Dare. Please.” He said, gesturing to a chair. Rachel walked in and sat down.
“Hunter. It’s been…Not long enough actually.” She said with a nod. “You always seem to be in here and getting a quest.” Hunter scoffed.
“Tell me about it.” Hunter said with a sigh. “What were you saying earlier, sir?” Hunter said, looking back at Chiron. “About Typhon?” He said quietly. Hunter was in the second titan war. He had fought along with his friends and many of them had died. He remembered all of the destruction Typhon had caused. Chiron looked at him, his expression turning somber again.
“It seems that when the titans and Typhon were forced back to Tartarus, it seemed to weaken.” He said quietly. “The gate to Tartarus seemed to become weaker, because of so much being sent back all at once. It would be simple for a being of high power to open it again. Setting—“ Rachel stood up suddenly and stiffened.
The bringer of fire and the mother of all
Will for once work together to open the pit and see Olympus fall
The son of the hunt and the son of the sea
Will lead two separate squads numbering three
One will travel far west and enter the great cleanse in the netherrealm
The other will go to the hearty southern fort to seek wings and a foe they will overwhelm
Both tasks are needed to protect camp and the home of the gods
With an all-seeing eye you will see success against the all of the odds.
She slumped back into her chair and sighed, running her hand through her hair. “That is no fun.” She said with a chuckle. Chiron looked back at Hunter and took a deep breath.
“Prometheus.” He said with a nod. “Prometheus was the thing who stole fire from Olympus and gave it to mortals. Prometheus would be able to open Tartarus. That’s how the cetus got out. Who knows what else he let out…”
“So we stop him.” Will said firmly. “We need to stop him before this goes too far. The gods can—“ Chiron shook his head.
“Typhon. The gate is weak and he is trying to escape.” Chiron said, shaking his head. “Not to mention Echidna…”
“Echidna.” Penny said, sort of blurted out. “She was that monster. She and Typhon created all of the monsters.” Chiron nodded.
“Not all of them, but many of them. Enough of them that she may very well have control of them all.” Chiron said sadly. “If Prometheus and Echidna are working together for once, then we are dealing with Titans and Monsters.” He looked at Hunter and Will. “The gods can’t help us. They’re busy making sure Typhon is kept in Tartarus.” Hunter looked at Chiron. He looked around the room and shook his head.
“No. There can’t be another war.” Hunter sighed and shook his head. “It just…It’s too soon.” Hunter ran a hand through his hair and could feel his heart clench. “This can’t happen.” He said quietly. Will stepped forward.
“Hunter, come on.” He said, putting a hand on his shoulder. “We have a quest. There isn’t another son of the hunt around. We need you.” Will said, shoving him a little. “As much as you might not like it, you’re one of the strongest in camp. We can’t do this without you.” Hunter sighed. Will was right. Hunter needed to be strong. Hunter took a deep breath, calming his nerves.
“2 squads. You’ve got one. I’ve got one. We leave tomorrow.” Hunter said with a nod. He looked up at Will who glanced at Penny.
“I wish you could come with me.” He said, taking her hands. Hunter sighed. Will needed someone strong to come with him and it couldn’t be Hunter.
“Will, take Kyle and Marina.” Hunter said with a nod. “If you get one, you get the other. I’ll take Philippa and…And umm…”
“I’ll go.” Hunter turned to see Dana stepping out of the infirmary. Hunter suddenly saw the woman in his dream, transforming into Dana. Hunter rubbed his eyes and cleared his throat.
“You’re sure?” Hunter said, looking from Dana to Chiron and then back to Dana. She nodded and Hunter sighed. “And Dana.” Chiron nodded.
“Go.” He said quietly. “I shall prepare for the oncoming battle. You children need your rest.” Hunter looked around the room, mouthing a silent thank you to Dana who nodded in response.
“Penny? Come on back in. I might be able to do something for those ribs.” She said, taking Penny’s arm with Will and leading her back into the infirmary. Hunter took a deep breath and looked at Chiron. Something seemed off about him. Hunter needed to tell Philippa about the quest, but the way Chiron sat worried Hunter. It felt very defeatist.
“Sir, if you don’t mind me asking, are you okay? Is there something wrong?” Hunter said, stepping toward the only father he ever knew. Chiron looked up, a little surprised and put his calm smile back on.
“Hunter…This feels wrong. There is something amiss and this whole thing seems to be leading up to something much bigger.” Hunter opened his mouth to speak, but Chiron stopped him. “We’ll talk later. I need to think.” Hunter nodded and stepped away.
“Thank you, sir.” He said with a slight bow before stepping outside. He immediately made a beeline for Aphrodite cabin. He didn’t notice, but he had started to run toward it. He finally reached the door and knocked, feeling almost nauseous from the smell of beauty product and perfume wafting out from inside. Daniel answered the door.
“Hey, Hunty.” He said with a wink. He stepped out, closing the door behind him slightly and put a hand on Hunter’s chest. “Philippa is lucky to have a man like you, you know.” Hunter looked in slight distaste as Daniel drew an infinite sign on Hunter’s chest. “If you ever feel like…Breaking an oath,” He leaned up and get in Hunter’s face. “I could rock your world.” He said with a wink. Hunter grabbed his wrist and twisted it, causing Daniel to let out a little yelp.
“I don’t have the time or the patience for this.” Hunter said, shoving him into the cabin. He let go and looked at Philippa who was in the corner of the cabin, braiding her sister’s hair. “Philippa? You got a few minutes?” He said with a nervous smile. Philippa looked up and around the room before nodding.
“Amy? Can you take over for me?” She said, holding the girl’s hair in place. Amy took over and Philippa walked out with Hunter. “What’s up, Hunter?” She asked, plainly. She looked back at her cabin once before taking his hand and leading him between two cabins. She put her hands on his chest and kissed his chin. Hunter sighed and pulled away from her a little.
“Listen. Philippa. We have a quest.” He said with a nod. “Well, I have a quest, but you’re coming with me.” He said, putting his hands on her shoulders. She looked happy and worried and angry and sad all at the same time.
“A quest, but I’m…I…” He could feel her stiffen a little. Hunter pulled her in for a hug and kissed her forehead. “That’s dangerous.”
“I’ll keep you safe.” Hunter said quietly. When did she become so worried about danger? This was the same girl who tackled a harpy and killed it with her bare hands. “You’ll be okay. We’ll all be okay.” He kissed her forehead and wondered how true his words would actually be.

Chapter 12 - Hunter

The 4 of them managed to make their way into the rooms and packed up their stuff. He was disappointed that this trip had to end quickly, but he felt awful for Penny. He felt bad for Will. He felt bad for Marina. Penny got hurt doing the dishes. The life of a demigod is not safe. There will be danger. Someone will more than likely get hurt. It just really sucks when that someone is someone you care about so deeply. Hunter packed up his things and Will’s things. Hunter knew that Penny was his first serious girlfriend. He had first met her when he accidentally walked in on them making out. Graphically. Hunter smiled softly at the memory, but his smile faded at the realization that that’s what all it was. A memory. There current situation is something much different. Something tragic. Hunter sighed and he sat down against the wall as he managed to consolidate both bags into one. It was easier now that neither Will’s or his bedrolls were coming back to camp with them.
The house groaned and Hunter stepped cautiously as he made his way out toward the front of the house. He found Marina sitting in what was left of a kitchen table chair, her head down on a piece of debris where the table once was. She was obviously sobbing and Hunter felt bad for her. Knowing her mom, it took a lot of convincing to let them use this house this weekend. Not only use the house, but not have her around. Marina had put a lot of work, effort, and favors to her mom all into this one trip and now the house is destroyed. Hunter finally padded over to her and crouched down next to the chair. She immediately wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. Hunter put his arms around her in a comforting way.
“I can’t believe this happened.” She said quietly. Hunter sighed and held her tighter, not wanting her to feel so bad. He closed his eyes and was suddenly shocked to feel lips on his. His eyes shot open only to be met by the desperate, groggy, teary and very embarrassed eyes of Marina. “Sorry.” She said as she pulled away from him. Hunter blushed and stood up, clearing his throat. “I thought you were Kyle.” She said quietly, hanging her head a little. Hunter nodded.
“Don’t worry about it.” Hunter said with a nod. He heard steps behind him and looked to see Kyle stepping quickly toward Marina. He hugged her and lifted her into his arms, kissing her.
“It’s okay. It’s not your fault, sweetie.” Kyle whispered into her ear. Hunter sighed and took a deep breath before walking out of the house. He slowly trudged to the pegasi, making sure that Penny’s was okay to be ridden by Marina on the way back to camp. He then turned his attention to Ulysses, brushing him a little and feeding him a sugar cube.
“Hey, buddy.” He said into the winged horse’s ear. “You ready for a long trip today, buddy? We’re going back to camp.” He said, trying to put a sense of excitement or joy into his voice, but finding it incredibly feigned.  The horse whinnied and looked past Hunter. Hunter raised an eyebrow and followed his eyes to see Philippa clutching her bag to her chest, eyes red and wet from tears. Hunter rubbed Ulysses on the nose one more time before walking to Philippa and wrapping his arms around her.
“Why did this have to happen to Penny?” She said quietly, burying her face in his chest. He buried his face in her hair. It smelled heavily of hair product. So strongly that he quickly had to pull away. Hunter was a little surprised to hear Philippa show concern for Penny. He didn’t know they were even close. Sure, Hunter felt sad about it, but he wasn’t shedding tears. “We talked so much last night. Even after Marina fell asleep.” She squeezed him tighter and he felt his shirt become wet with her tears.
“Come on, guys. Let’s get back to camp.” Kyle said, holding Marina in his arms. Hunter nodded and separated from Philippa, walking toward the pegasi. Hunter watched as Marina reluctantly approached Penny’s pegasi, looking emotionally drained and tired. There was no way that she would be able to control a pegasi. Or at least be aware enough to ride one that’s unfamiliar to her. Hunter put a hand on her shoulder. She looked at him and he could see how she was carrying herself. She blamed herself for this.
“Marina.” He grabbed her shoulders and looked her in the eyes. He shook her back and forth gently. She looked at him oddly. He shook her more and slowly a smile spread across her face. She giggled when he finally stopped releasing her from his grasp. He looked at her with concerned eyes. She had the remnants of a smile, but she still looked tired. “Marina, take Ulysses. Sleep. He won’t let you fall.”
“That’s your Pegasus, Hunter.” She said, shaking her head. “Don’t worry. I’m fine.” She said with a dismissive wave. She turned toward the horses and Hunter caught her arm.
“Marina. Take Ulysses.” He insisted. She sighed and finally nodded. He helped her onto Ulysses who let out a whinny and snorted, looking at Hunter. “Buddy, keep it even. Make sure she’s safe.” He whispered into the horse’s ear. Ulysses let out a snort and nodded. Hunter walked over to the last pegasi and mounted up. A moment later, they took off into the sky. Hunter stayed toward the back and to the outside of the group. It took a little getting used to the delicacy of this Pegasus. Ulysses was very strong and quick while this one was more gentle and graceful. They finally managed to get to an even cruising speed and altitude. After an hour or two, Hunter glanced at Marina. She had finally managed to fall asleep on Ulysses’ back, slumped over his neck. Hunter was glad that she had managed to calm down.
“She’s beating herself up about this.” Hunter turned to see Kyle flying next to him. Hunter nodded solemnly.
“I know.” Hunter said quietly. “She shouldn’t be. She had no way of knowing that a monster would come and destroy the house.”
“Tell that to her mom…” Kyle said with a sigh, his voice trailing off. “I never thanked you. There was no way she would have been able to sleep if she were on Penny’s pegasi. Thanks.” He said with a nod. Hunter waved and shook his head.
“No. It was nothing.” He glanced at Philippa who was flying smoothly next to Marina. “I should be thanking her for this weekend. I feel really good about things between Philippa and I. They were a little iffy, but now I feel…confident.” Hunter said with a small smile. He sighed and looked over at Philippa. She stretched and then carefully tucked her knees up. With the agility and balance of a gymnast, or someone with a lot of practice at least, she stood on Dixie’s back. Doing a small wiggle she flexed her whole body and then relaxed it, helping her legs to loosen. Hunter laughed and zoomed next to her. She smiled down at him and winked at him.
“Should I dance? Do a dance for my man?” She said with a giggle. Hunter laughed.
Can you dance?” He asked with a grin. She stuck out her tongue a little, teasingly, as she took a stance. She took a deep breath and then shook her head.
“No. Probably not.” She spun a little and then sat down backwards, leaning back on Dixie’s neck. Hunter smiled and closed his eyes a moment. It was so calm. After everything that they had done in the past few hours it was nice to be able to just relax. It wasn’t long before they were nearing the camp again.
“Come on. It’s just a few more miles.” Hunter said as he dropped altitude. “Kyle, take care of Marina.” He said, gently diving toward Long Island Sound. Hunter smiled as the wind whipped through his hair. He finally slowed to a stop and landed in camp near the beach. He trotted toward the stables and slid off. Philippa followed close behind and a moment later, Marina and Kyle did the same. The four of them, hurried off toward the Big house. Hunter guessed that they were maybe 30 minutes behind Will and Penny. “Chiron, how-“
“Penny is fine. Will is with her. She’s awake, but very weak.” Chiron said, putting a hand up. He scanned the group. He sighed and looked at Kyle and Marina. “Mr. Julius, why don’t you take Ms. Goldman back to her cabin? Ms. Beaumont, the infirmary is right through there if you’d like to visit Ms. Sawyer.” He directed to the door. Hunter glanced back as Kyle and Marina left. Chiron waited for Philippa to close the infirmary door behind her before looking at Hunter. “Now,” Chiron took a deep breath and sat down in his wheelchair. “Will told me what happened. However, when I tried to get a description of the beast from him, he was too bothered by Ms. Sawyer’s injuries to give a proper description.” He said calmly. He wheeled over toward his desk and pulled a notebook off the shelf.
“What is that, sir?” Hunter asked, stepping forward. Chiron opened the book and passed it across the table to him. He looked down and saw pictures, some taken with a camera, some painted or drawn. “Hellhounds. Harpies. Centaurs.” He read. “Is this a book of all the monsters?” Hunter asked quietly. Chiron nodded.
“When a monster’s picture is taken with a camera, as long as you can see through the mist you can see the monster.” He said with a nod. “However, some monsters haven’t been seen in so long that we don’t have photographs of them. We only have artist’s representations. You’ve seen enough of them to quickly sort through what it is and what it isn’t.” Hunter nodded and turned back to the book. As he turned the pictures got older and older. Not only that, but the paper seemed to get older and older. Going from mass produced notebook paper to a grainy parchment. That’s when he saw it. On a piece of copy paper was a black and white polaroid of the monster. The same dragon-like serpentine features. Under the picture was written its name.
“Trojan Cetus.” He pointed to it and slid the book back across. “That’s it. The Trojan Cetus.” He said with a nod. Chiron looked down and his eyes widened. He shook his head.
“This cannot be, Hunter.” He said firmly. “The last time the Trojan Cetus was killed by a demigod was in the early 1900s. That was the last time we saw it long enough to get a picture of it.” Hunter raised an eyebrow.
“So what? It’s back now. Why can’t that be true?” Hunter said, feeling slightly worried.
“The last time before that, it was killed by Perseus.” Hunter furrowed his brow.
“Perseus? Like…Perseus? As in THE Perseus?” Chiron nodded solemnly. “So, if it’s back-“
“Then it regenerated too quickly.” Chiron said, solemnly. There was a silence that seemed to last forever. “Get some rest, Hunter. I’ll need to speak to the gods.” Hunter stood and nodded.
“Yes, sir. I’ll speak with you tomorrow.” Hunter turned to leave.
“Hunter?” Chiron said quietly. “Be ready for a quest. I feel there may be something big happening.” Hunter nodded and took a deep breath before exiting the Big house.

Chapter 11 - Hunter

Hunter inhaled sharply as he woke up. He immediately yawned and stretched his arms. Glancing around, he pushed himself into a sitting position and cracked his back. He slowly stood up and ran a hand through his hair, yawning and stretching again. Hunter glanced at the still sleeping Will and Kyle and rubbed his eyes. Sleeping on the floor wasn’t something strange for Hunter. On quests or in the woods at camp or even in the Hermes cabin while he was a resident. The previous night was not a wonderful night of sleep. He looked down at his bedroll which was a piece of garbage. His pad was flat and his pillow was basically useless. It was probably time for a new one. He picked it up and crushed it into a ball before tossing it into the trashcan.
His stomach grumbled loudly and he quickly slipped out the door of the guy’s sleeping room. He immediately heard noise coming from the kitchen. There was a hissing and a clanging noise. Hunter cautiously drew his knife and stepped slowly toward the kitchen. There was talking, well more whispering. Hunter stepped closer and carefully peered around the corner into the kitchen. He saw smoke pouring out from an opened window and he hurried toward the door, only to hear giggling and the water being turned on.
“Well, that didn’t go well.” Philippa’s voice said with a giggle. Hunter leaned against the wall, listening into their talking.  “I followed your instructions, Penny.”
“No, I said 350  not 450. That’s kind of a big difference.” Penny said with a giggle. “Here. We’ve got more. We’ll just try it again.” Hunter raised an eyebrow as they spoke. Were they cooking?
“Marina, is it okay if we use all of this?” Philippa said. He heard giggles and the shifting of pans, making a loud clanging. He could’ve sworn he heard whispering too.
“Sure. The guys have to make breakfast tomorrow, so the less they have to work with, the harder it is.” Marina said with a giggle.
“That’ll be good. Will can’t cook worth beans.” Penny said with a laugh. “And knowing Kyle, he can’t either. That brother of mine.” Hunter leaned closer to the door.
“The wild card is Hunter.” Philippa said with a sigh. There was the sound of the oven opening and closing.
“Hunter…Philippa you are one lucky girl.” Hunter’s eyes widened at Marina’s words. “He’s strong, brave, smart, unbelievably handsome. I just wish Kyle were half the man he is.” Hunter leaned even closer to the door, baffled at their topic of discussion.
“Did you know he speaks 6 languages?” Philippa said, a tinge of showing off in her voice. “He speaks six languages AND he’s a mortal. How hot is that?”
“Oh, so hot.” Penny said, moving closer to the door. “If he weren’t under that oath…” her voice trailed off. Hunter’s eyes widened and he leaned even closer to the door, actually leaning on it.
“The things I would do to him.” Marina said, moving next to the door. “I just want to tear his shirt off and-“ Hunter felt the door swing open. Hunter stumbled in and turned bright red. He realized, then, that he was still in his pajamas which happened to be no shirt and a pair of pajama pants.
“Uhh…I…smoke…” He looked around and blushed even harder. Philippa bit her bottom lip and took a step closer, putting a hand on his chest. He blushed even harder. “I’m…just…I’m going…to…” He put his hands up and backed out of the kitchen, quickly heading back to the guy’s sleeping room. “Guys, wake up. The girls are making breakfast.”
“No. Eleven more minutes…” Will said, rolling onto his stomach. “I don’t want to go there anymore. Their mean there.” Hunter grabbed his bag and set it on the counter.
“This…I’m…” Kyle muttered in his sleep. “Stupid…things…” Hunter rolled his eyes and walked over, kicking both of them lightly in the ribs.
“Get up. Breakfast. Women. Swimming.” Hunter said, trying to get a reaction from them. Will sat up groggily and rubbed his eyes.
“You would not believe the dream I just had…” He said, stretching a little. “I was swimming and then Penny was there and she had breakfast. She was also naked. It was weird.” He said with a nod. He finally stood up and shuffled over to his bag. Hunter turned to Kyle who rolled onto his back and looked up at the ceiling.
“These women…” He said quietly. “They have us watch 4 movies last night and then they expect us to wake up. It’s only…
“Noon.” Hunter said, looking at his watch. Kyle blinked a moment before standing up and pointing accusingly at Hunter.
“No. No, we changed time zones. It’s…”
“Noon. This watch goes by the moon. It’s always right and it adjusts with my location.” He said waving his wrist in his face. “Ha!” He said, turning back to his bag and starting to change into his swimsuit.
“This is all your fault anyway.” Kyle said with a scoff. “You and your…lack of…Disney movies.” He said, waving his hand dismissively. Hunter waited for the others to get dressed before they all headed into the kitchen.
“Good morning, gentlemen.” Marina said, lightly kissing Kyle on the cheek. “And Hunter.” She said with a giggle. Philippa came up behind him and put her chin on his shoulder.
“Hello, handsome.” She said before kissing him lightly on the cheek.
“Hi.” He said, still blushing from earlier. “Breakfast looks amazing, ladies. Thank you so much.” Hunter said, trying to recover from his earlier mishap. He smiled and sat down with everyone else at the kitchen table. They ate in comfortable silence, mostly because the food was so good. “I wonder how Capture the flag is going.” Hunter said quietly. Everyone scoffed.
“Seriously. Only you would be thinking about that.” Will said with a chuckle. “We all know it’s your favorite thing ever, but we’re on the other side of the country. Just relax.” Hunter sighed and picked at his food a little.
“I’m relaxed. I was just trying to make small talk.” He said with a shrug. “This is really good, by the way.” He said, taking a bite of egg. Everyone finished eating and put their dishes in the sink.
“Alright! Time for swimming!” Kyle said as he started to run out of the house. Marina snagged him by the back of the shirt.
“Nope. No. No. We just ate.” She said, shaking her finger at him. “30 minutes. Then we swim.” Everyone sighed and sat back down except Penny. She rolled up her sleeves and stood at the sink.
“You guys do what you want. After swimming to Atlantis, I’m done for like…ever.” She said, waving her hand. She turned and started to do the dishes.
“Thanks, Penny.” Marina said quietly. “I am not going to be carrying anyone out of the water because they cramped up. 28 minutes left.” She said, firmly.
“Oh, thanks, mom.” Will said with a scoff. “She follows us into battle with any monster that Tartarus can cook up, but when it comes to swimming cramps….” Will shook his head and casually played with the condensation on his glass of water. He floated it into the middle of the table and then made a ring out of it. He shaped it into a star before making a small square out of it and splashed it onto Kyle’s face. Will laughed when Kyle flinched and reached up to wipe it off. He pulled it away and put it in the middle of the table again. With a laugh he splashed it onto Marina and Philippa, dodging it deftly around their hands when they grabbed at it. He threw it towards Hunter and he dodged at the last second, sending the sphere of water straight at Penny, hitting her in the butt. She gasped and jumped a little.
“What was that?” She said, turning around and looking at the table. She put a hand on her butt and felt it. “Why is my—Dang it, Will.” She said, walking over and smacking him with a towel. With red cheeks, he smiled and winked at her. She shook her head and went back to doing dishes. Will took some water out of his cup and started playing with it on the table again when Marina huffed and stood up.
“Fine. Go swimming. I’m sick and tired of Will and his water tricks.” She smacked him in the arm and laughed. “If I wanted to get wet, I’d just go swimming.” She said with a roll of her eyes. Hunter laughed and followed the others out the door, pulling his shirt off and running into the water. He dove under the water and swam for a little while before emerging.
“The water is perfect!” He said with a smile as he saw Philippa looking at the water cautiously. She was edging her way toward the water, baby step by baby step. Hunter jogged over to Marina who was on the beach only trying to get a tan. “Watch.” He said, tapping Marina on the shoulder. She raised an eyebrow and lowered her sunglasses to look at Philippa. A devious smile spread across her face. Hunter ran toward Philippa and laughed. “Philippa!” He shouted. She turned around and then gasped as Hunter swept her into his arm, running into the water. He finally fell back and dragged Philippa into the water. He wrapped his arms tightly around her and stood up.
“I cannot believe you!” She said, smacking his chest. He laughed and hugged her tighter. “You are so mean to me!” A smile slowly broke across her face. She finally stopped hitting his chest and put her hands on his arms. She grinned and looked up at him before running her hands to his chest, digging her nails lightly into his skin before standing on her tiptoes to kiss him lightly on the lips. Hunter couldn’t help, but lean in a little, kissing her back. It was an odd feeling, but he liked it. He finally pulled away and let her go, leaving her looking very disappointed. He heard wolf whistling and a howl from behind him and he looked over to see Kyle treading water and clapping.
“’Atta boy, Hunter!” He said with a laugh. Will emerged from the water next to him and grinned, clapping as well. Hunter turned red and started to head toward the shore. Will suddenly appeared in front of him.
“We’re just kidding around, man. Take it easy.” He said, patting him on the arm.
“Guys?” Kyle said. Hunter turned around and looked at him. His happy expression changed into a very worried one. “Guy-guys, I think-“ His eyes widened.
“I told you to wait 30 minutes, sweetie!” Marina shouted from the shore. Hunter bust out laughing.
“No! Guys, shut up! There’s something down there!” He said, starting to swim back to the shore. Hunter immediately sobered up and started to back out of the water. He grabbed Philippa’s hand and started to pull her with him. Will took a few steps forward and then dove under the surface of the water. There were a few muted noises from under the water and they were all standing on the beach waiting for him to emerge. Suddenly, Will burst out from the water, shooting like a bullet out of the water.
“Run! Get away!” he shouted before landing in the sand. Hunter helped him up and drew his knife. He looked at the water and waited. There was a large splash and a huge snake-like monster burst from the water, looking right at them. It had a fish tail that was about as big as Hunter and had thick scales and sharp teeth. It roared and Hunter switched to his bow, quickly notching an arrow. It walked toward them, big clawed feet plodding through the water.
“What is that?!” Philippa said, running over to the pegasi and grabbing her bow. She stood next to Hunter and notched an arrow, taking aim at the beast.
“I don’t know, but it doesn’t look friendly!” Hunter screamed as he fired an arrow. It flew through the air and helplessly glanced off of the thick scales. There was a gurgling sound and it faced them before shooting out a stream of water. Hunter dodged, but could feel the heat emanating from it. The monster took a step toward them and swung its tail at them. They dodged, but there was loud crack and Hunter turned to see a big chunk taken out of the condo. The house looked weak at best and it looked like it could break at any moment. Hunter could see a room though. It was the kitchen.
“Penny!” Will screamed as he ran toward the house. Philippa ran and stopped him. “Philippa, get out of the way!” He shouted trying to push past her. Marina stood next to her and stopped him.
“Will! We’ll get her. We need your help to take this thing out! We’ll get her. Go!” She shouted before running into the house. Hunter fired another arrow and cursed under his breath when the sea monster ran after him.
“Come on!” Hunter shouted as he drew his knife. The monster roared again and walked after him. Hunter ran, trying to lead him away from the house. He found himself backed against a line of rocks and he swallowed as he saw the beast looming over him. He suddenly watched as the monster suddenly seemed frozen in place. It couldn’t move any closer. Hunter looked down to see water surrounding its feet.
“Get back here, you scaly son of a bitch!” Will shouted, tears rolling down his cheeks. He stepped forward and raised his hands as he dragged the sea monster back toward the water. The beast roared and Hunter heard the gurgling noise again. Will quickly put another hand up and stopped the spray of water in its throat. “Hunter, aim for his mouth!” He shouted. Hunter nodded and aimed an arrow, waiting for another opportunity. Will dropped to his knee and Hunter could tell he was tired. Even standing in water, he couldn’t keep control like this forever. Hunter watched as vines shot up from the ground and starting wrapping around monster. Kyle appeared next to Will and helped him up. The monster roared and Hunter fired, his arrow sinking into the pink flesh of its mouth. The vines wrapped tighter and tighter and Hunter fired into its mouth again. The vines finally crushed the beast into a pile of dust, quickly being washed away in the water. Will finally looked down, breathing heavily.
“Penny!” Will shouted before doggedly hurrying into the house. Hunter hurried after and found Will cradling Penny in his arms. “Come on. Penny. Wake up. Penny you have to wake up. This isn’t right.” He pleaded, wiping tears away from his cheeks. He sighed and picked her up. “I’m going back to camp.” He said hurrying over to his pegasi. Hunter looked on helplessly as Will quickly took off.
“We fed her some ambrosia. She’s alive, but she’s weak. We found her under a chunk of debris.” Marina said solemnly. “What was that thing?” she asked quietly.
“I don’t know, but it wasn’t your average monster. I’ve never seen it before.” Kyle said, putting an arm comfortingly around her.
“We need to tell Chiron. Pack up as much as you can. We need to go.” Hunter said, trying to sound calm. Philippa wrapped her arms around Hunter’s midsection and buried her face in his chest. “Marina, we’ll need you ride a pegasi.” He said as he wrapped his arms around Philippa. “Why did this have to happen?” He muttered quietly.
