Chapter 22 - Will

“Is it getting closer?!” Will shouted, looking back at Kampe who was close behind them, fangs bared and scimitars wielded menacingly. Will took a deep breath and looked over at Kyle and Marina, Kyle with his scythe out to defend any coming attacks. He looked down at the ground and saw a lake. It wasn’t much, but if he could get her to follow him to the water then he could take her out. The problem was that it was coming way too fast. Will rubbed his face and drew his trident. “I cannot believe I’m doing this again.” He mumbled as he pulled toward Kyle and Marina. “Kyle, I’m going to aim for the water.” He said, pointing to the lake. Kyle looked down then shook his head, giving Will a pleading look.
“Will, come on. Once we get to San Antonio, we’ll take her out.”
“No, we don’t know what we’ll be up against and obviously hitting her with a bus and then running her all the way to Texas didn’t slow her down, so we just need to take her down.”
“Will, NO.” Kyle said insistently, glancing back at the large set of wings flapping after them. “We’ll just land and take her out then.” Will took a deep breath.
“We land, she’ll come down on top of us. If I can get to the water, I can take her out. Just keep flying toward San Antonio. Don’t stop until you’re at the Alamo. I’ll catch up.” Will said, turning around on Hurricane’s back. He looked at Kyle and Marina and sighed. “Kyle, GO! I promise. I’ll be fine!”
“No! This is stupid!” Kyle said, reaching for Will’s shirt. Will looked at their Pegasus.
“Petunia, keep flying.”
“Yes, my lord!” The Pegasus shouted before zooming off after them. After they were good enough distance ahead Will finally looked at Kampe who was a lot closer than last time he looked back.
“How you doing, Hurricane?” Will said, patting his back. He could tell that fatigue was starting to hit Hurricane.
“Just fine, sir!” Hurricane shouted with a slight wheeze. “What can I do to take out that thing? I’ll bite her to pieces. Just give the order!” Will smiled a little and looked down at the water. He was going to have to time this just right.
“First time I did this I was showing off…” He mumbled, adjusting his grip on his trident. “I should have practiced.” He patted Hurricane on the side. “Alright, Hurricane. I’m going to lead her away. I want you to circle and then come back for me in 10 minutes, okay? Take a break, buddy. You’re doing great.”
“I’m a war horse, sir. No rest necessary!” He said, wheezing a little harder.
“It’s on me, pal.” Will said with a little chuckle. “Alright. Time to go. 10 minutes, Hurricane!”
“Sir, yessir!” Hurricane said with a snort. Will took a deep breath and looked up at Kampe.
“Hey, lizardbreath!” He shouted as he took aim. Kampe hissed in response. “Think fast.” He said as he threw his trident with all his strength and slipped off the backend of Hurricane.
“Good luck, my lord!” Will quickly rolled so he was face down and looked at the water. There was a screech and he turned to see his trident zoom past Kampe and it changed direction, pointing toward Will.
“You insolent, little insect!” The dragon hissed before taking off after him with a few wing flaps. Will cursed under his breath and pulled in his arms and legs, trying to speed up before he was made short work by those scimitars. “How dare you!” Will was shooting toward the ground and the closer he got, the faster he was realizing how off target he was. The water was about 20 feet to his left and unless the lake decided to move, he was going to be a puddle on the ground in a few minutes.
“Come on…Come on…” He tried flapping his arms and legs, but realizing how dumb he looked and how useless it was he quickly gave up on that attempt. “Wait…I need to move a lake. I’m a child of Poseidon. DUH!” He said, taking a moment to facepalm before reaching for his trident. It hadn’t returned yet. “Stupid!” He shouted, facepalming again. “Think…Think….Come back, trident!” He shouted and he wasn’t sure if it worked or it was just coincidence, but there was a small burst of light and it appeared on his belt buckle. He quickly drew it and waited for his moment. There was a loud hiss and Will turned back to see Kampe bearing down on him, her swords raised. He let out an anxious little whimper and threw his trident at the ground. It shot straight down and slammed into the ground, causing a tiny fracture that quickly grew into a deep trench that the water started to fill. The closer he got to the water, the stronger he felt, like the water was alive and he could feel its presence.
“Today, you die, worm!” Kampe hissed as she swung and Will felt the blade slice into his back. He screamed in agony and went limp as he was blinded in pain. He just felt the sensation of falling and the screaming pain in his back. He couldn’t believe that he would die this close to water. The one thing that could save him. Suddenly, he felt the impact of the water that adjusted to his falling and eased it to a soft fall, like landing in a giant pool of Jell-o, springing back gently to a stop. He felt the pain start to ease and he opened his eyes, reaching his hand to his back where he felt the cut on his back close and heal until it was like it never happened. He looked down and saw his trident sticking straight up in the ground, waiting for its owner to recover him. He swam down and grabbed it before using the bottom as  a push off, launching himself out of the water, straight at Kampe who was stalking the surface, waiting for him to surface. Kampe screeched in surprise and shrieked as Will’s trident stuck itself into Kampe’s stomach. Will whipped around, using the water as support and he swung his trident, throwing Kampe into the water.
“You’re in my doghouse, now.” He said as he dove into the water, stabbing at the Kampe who thrashed madly in the water. Kampe gurgled in the water then finally went limp, dissolving into dust that floated to the top in dark sludge. Will took a breath then looked down at the bottom where the two poisonous scimitars stuck blade down. He pulled them out and resurfaced, dragging them behind.
“Well done, my lord!” Hurricane said, stamping his foot in applause. Will climbed out of the water and patted Hurricane’s neck.
“Well, I was going to let you take her down, but I’ll let you have the next one.” Will said, taking a deep breath as he attached the scimitars to Hurricane’s side.
“Deal! Next monster is mine! Let me at them!” Hurricane whinnied and snorted, causing Will to laugh. After feeling like he was dying then the fight underwater, it felt good to laugh. Will swung himself on top and took a deep breath, saying a small prayer to his dad.
“Alright. Did you see where Petunia went off to?” Will said, settling himself on Hurricane’s back. He took off and flew at a leisurely speed. “Well, either way, go to San Antonio. We’ll meet them there.”
